MEDICINE AT UNIVALLE, THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY
(November 23 2002 – translated from El Pais, Colombia)
A group of 74 students, graduating next Friday, achieved recognition this year for a public university
“This is a very important achievement for public university as it demonstrates that in spite of the difficulties we can be successful and certify the quality of education in our region”. This is what Ana Milena Sanchez , future graduate of the Universidad del Valle, had to say about the first place placement of her School in the national evaluation of 2874 students by the ICFES.
She was part of the 76 students that represented Univalle in the tests designed to qualify the Medical Schools as certified by the Ministry of Education. The second place was occupied by the Institute of Sciences in Health (Antioquia) and the third place caws held by the Universidad Javeriana (Bogota)... Ana Milena, who dreams of becoming a Pediatric Oncologist in order to treat children with cancer, held the tenth place in the individual tests. Five students of the U. del Valle had advanced placements. Her classmate Carmen Elisa Ocampo held the seventh as she credited both the individual effort and the strong belief the teachers had in all of them.
Hector Monje, director of the program in Medicine, describes this group of students as very talented but also credits the University for having an illustrious trajectory supported by the Municipal Health office, and the State office that facilitates the use of public hospitals to train. “At the University State Hospital we live thorough some very difficult experiences that leave a definite impression on us as sometime we lack the basic elements to deliver care” states Alexander Martinez who will pursue further training in Ophthalmology once he graduates. “From this tough reality we leave in a daily fashion, we learned that the good physician must be integral and that he/she must treat the patient with great care and quality” explains Juan Carlos Alvir, eight place occupant.
For the future High school graduates that believe it’s utopian to hope for a career in medicine Valeria Giraldo has this advice: “It was a privilege for me to study in the University. I always believed in my qualifications – anyone with a dream must fight for it as did some of my classmates who without resources, and while sometimes maintaining a family, achieved graduation, sometimes with honors”.
Academic Excellence
The exam given by the ICFES on a yearly basis measures the quality of the future professionals in all the areas of learning and constitutes a letter of introduction for the most outstanding programs and students. Las year Universidad Javeriana.
