| ADSUV ASOCIACION DE EGRESADOS DE LA FACULTAD DE SALUD DE LA UNIVERSIDAD DEL VALLE (EXTERIOR) | HISTORY OF THE DIVISION DE SALUD OF UNIVERSITY DEL VALLE | | The Medical School of the Universidad del Valle celebrated the 50th anniversary October 17-20th 2001. It was created on may 29th, 1950 by Decree 641 of the government of el Valle in response to a recommendation of the Deans of the Medical Schools existing at that time. The Colegio Medico del Valle adopted this recommendation and on October 12th 1951 initiated academic activities under the direction of doctor Gabriel Velasquez Palau and five other professors. The first classes were held at the old cloister of Santa Librada. Two years later they started clinical training at the Hospital San Juan de Dios. The University Hospital was under construction and only till 1956 were some of the floors added as training sites. During these years 2754 physicians have graduated. They are characterized by professional aptitude and a high commitment to the region, state and country. Many have performed, and currently carry out important roles in local, national and international organizations as well as academic positions. Currently the Medical School has an enrollment of 677 students, originating from all socio-economic strata and all the regions of Colombia. They have competed with many aspiring candidates to gain acceptance into this Medical School. In year 2001 618 candidates were seeking 80 available positions.
